The Art And Architecture of Islamic Cairo

Since Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798, the western traveller has been obsessed with the Pharaohs and Egypt's ancient past. Her Islamic culture has been largely ignored, and the pyramids have been allowed to cast a long shadow over the visual culture of Islamic Cairo, obscuring a magnificent art and architectural heritage that has lasted over a thousand years, from the building of the Mosque of Amr in the seventh century to that of Muhammad Ali in the nineteenth. Cairo is full of masterpieces of medieval art and architecture reflecting the status of Egypt as the centre of several significant Muslim empires. The purpose of this book is to redress the cultural balance and examine the art and architectural treasures of Cairo from the Arab to the Ottoman conquests (642-1517). Set within an historical narrative, the stylistic development of the visual arts is explained within changing religious, social and political contexts. Examples of the decorative arts - ceramics, glass, woodwork, metalwork, textiles and manuscripts - are examined in the Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo, and other major collections in Europe and the USA.

Architecture and the decorative arts are dealt with separately with detailed descriptions, illustrating how the story of Islamic art and architecture is one of continuing adaptation and change. By concentrating on Cairo's Islamic art and architecture, Yeomans has created a study of Islamic style which is unprecedented in its historical scope. Fully illustrated with over 200 vivid photographs, plans and elevations and a comprehensive glossary of architectural terms, this book will be essential reading for architects, designers and historians; indeed, for anyone with an appreciation of one of the world's finest and richest architectural legacies, tragically under threat.

Cosmology And Architecture In Premodern Islam: An Architectural Reading Of Mystical Ideas

Samer Akkach, Cosmology And Architecture In Premodern Islam: An Architectural Reading Of Mystical Ideas
State University of New York Press | ISBN 0791464113 | 2005 | PDF | 3 MB | 289 pages
Akkach seeped himself in the study of metaphysics, cosmology, and symbolism at the hands of Adrian Snodgrass and Peter Kollar of Sydney. He has also a great familiarity with the exposition of traditional doctrines by Rene Guenon, Frithjof Schuon, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, and others. These interests have led him to pen a work which is amazingly erudite, and fascinating. He has divided the work into four sections:
  • 1) the discursive order, which deals with the study of symbolism in academia, and the various interpretations lended it by various modern academics, which is juxtaposed with the position of Traditionalists authors,
  • 2) the metaphysical order, which discusses issues related to Sufi metaphysics, such as: Being and Presence, Primodiality, the metaphysics of the cosmogonic Word, the geometry of Being, and so forth,
  • 3) the cosmological order, which deals with Archetypes, creation and the hierarchy of Being, and
  • 4) the architectural order, which deals with the ordering of space in the Islamic architectural tradition, and how the Archetypes, and Sufi metaphysics in general are reflected in Islamic architecture.

Design and Construction in Romanesque Architecture

Design and Construction in Romanesque Architecture
Cambridge University Press | ISBN 0521830338 | 2004-01-12 | PDF | 234 pages | 5.61 MB
Edson Armi offers an original interpretation of Romanesque architecture by focusing on buildings in northern Italy, Switzerland, southern France, and Catalonia, the regions where Romanesque architecture first appeared around 1000 AD. He integrates the study of medieval structure with a knowledge of construction, decoration and articulation to determine the origins of medieval architecture and the High Romanesque style. Armi's in depth study reveals new knowledge about design decisions in the early Middle Ages.

Beginning with the development of Italian art nouveau--"stile liberty"--and moving through futurism, fascism, rationalism, and on to the creative experimentation of the present day, it explores the work of such pivotal figures as Raimondo d Aronco, Antonio Sant Elia, Adalberto Libera, Giuseppe Terragni, Pier Luigi Nervi, Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa, Aldo Rossi, and Renzo Piano.
The Architecture of Modern Italy is exhaustively illustrated with rare period images, new photography, maps, drawings, and plans. With Colin Rowe's Italian Architecture of the 16th Century, it provides a nearly complete overview of the history of Italian architecture.

From the neoclassical fantasies of Giovanni Battista Piranesi to the spectacular steeland-glass gallerias of Milan and Naples, it reveals an underappreciated history of richness and complexity.

ZahaHadid Works Planet Architecture

ZahaHadid Works Planet Architecture
Publisher: in-D | Number Of Pages: 300 | Publication Date: 2003-10 | ISBN:1893801187 | CD-ROM | 638Mb | 50Mb×9+8Mb
Zaha Hadid is one of the leading architects of our time. True to her provocative architectural research, her recently built works realize challenging and innovative designs once thought unbuildable. Moreover, a look at her pending projects promise even more dramatic shifts in our understanding and experience of architecture. Built works include: Contemporary Arts Center, Bergisel Ski Jump, Car Park & Terminus Hoenheim-Nord. Projects include: Phaeno- Science Center Wolfsburg, MAXXI- Museum of Arts of the 21st Century, BMW Plant- Central Building, One-North- Vista Masterplan Price Tower Arts Center.
Features: Video Interviews [60 min] VR Panoramic Views [11] Paintings [12] Photographs [70] Models [73] Drawings [70] Computer Renderings [90] Computer Animations [13] The PlanetArchitecture.com Series of e-archives provide virtual tours which transcend the capabilities of traditional media. Utilizing an intuitive multi-referenced interface, e-archives allow users self-directed experiences through a comprehensive collection of videos, photographs, VR panoramic views, drawings, and renderings. Am I ready for digital books? I was excited about this new media format thinking I could use images for a screen saver or look at more detail, zoom in; but i was a bit diasppointed. This is better than the Morphosis one I also bought at the same time but many of the images are of limited size and i was hoping they could be viewed on a large format flat screen. Navigation takes a bit of getting used to. I still have a hard time reading content for long periods on the screen. For the price i think this should have been edited as a DVD video/documentray interview for viewing on a TV. It seems this format is stuck between CD and DVD, not a very satisfying experience. I think it should play itself with a commentary than having the user click through the various obscure tabs. There are alot of drawings and renderings that may not be available elseware; Hadid's work is hard to picture, visiting the real building is still the only way to really understand them. Planet Architecture has the best information on some of the most influential architects today and the past. And whats great is that its all grouped in ONE CD, not in a bunch of separate books. Whether you are a student doing a project or an architecture enthusiast these cds are great buys. The cd is easy to navigate and graphically interesting. I suggest you buy one for yourself and a friend.

Architecture and Modernity: A Critique

Architecture and Modernity: A Critique
The MIT Press | Pages: 275 | 1999-04-30 | ISBN: 0262082640 | 6MB
Critical theories such as those of the Frankfurt School of the twenties and thirties gave rise to a complex and sophisticated critique of modernity and modernism. The history and theory of twentieth-century architecture, which developed rather independently of this rich tradition, appear naive and unbalanced in comparison. In this exploration of the relationship between modernity, dwelling, and architecture, Hilde Heynen attempts to bridge this gap between the discourse of the modern movement and cultural theories of modernity. On one hand, she discusses architecture from the perspective of critical theory, and on the other she modifies positions within critical theory by linking them with architecture. She assesses architecture as a cultural field that structures daily life and that embodies major contradictions inherent in modernity, arguing that architecture nonetheless has a certain capacity to adopt a critical stance vis-à-vis modernity.

This model, has been made in the 4th month of these year. Since then, I hardly found time to completely finish it. But normally in the last month of the year, I will have a few free time. And it is an advantage for me to complete this project and other personal 3d project that I have kept on hold.

Other Trangsformers that are on my drawing board is MEGATRON, the Decepticon leader, and I choose a super artillery tank unit as it disguise. To me, it is very suitable because of its behavior. A command unit and also a destroyer.

But for now, let us give optimus prime, his time.
